The #ClaimYourWaterRights is a mass mobilization campaign that aims to awaken people to demand their rights to clean and safe water. The outbreak of the corona virus which is a WASH-centric disease led the campaign team to carry out a preliminary rapid assessment in public Healthcare facilities in Enugu state to determine the state of
WASH services in these hospitals. 58 hospitals across the 17 LGAs of the state were assessed as shown in the figure below.

During the course of this assessment, we had an interview with the Hospital Administrator of Enugu State Hospital Management Board, where he stated that seven general hospitals in the state were mapped out for water provision. Also, during
Episode II of the weekly #ClaimYourWaterRights radio program, held on 3rd June 2020, the Hospital Administrator made a commitment that he will come back on air, before the end of the year, to recount the number of government-owned hospitals where water facilities have been provided.

In following up with this commitment, the #ClaimYourWaterRights team commenced
a COUNTDOWN exercise to hold the Hospital Management Board accountable and ensure they meet up with the commitments.
Four months after these commitments were made, the #ClaimYourWaterRights team is embarking on a tracking exercise to monitor the progress of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene interventions made in public health care facilities in Enugu State.

The team paid a visit to Board with the aim of getting an approval from the Hospital Management Board to embark on monitoring exercise to track the progress of WASH interventions made in
the public health care facilities.

The Hospital Administrator, who warmly welcomed the team, affirmed that several WASH
interventions have commenced or completed in various public health care facilities across the state. Some of his key statements are highlighted below:
 As we speak, the boreholes in the General Hospitals in Nsukka, Udi and all Isolation Centres are completed and awaiting commissioning;
 General hospital Agbani has been completed with WASH facilities incorporated;
 We have started drilling boreholes in the General Hospitals in Enugu Ezike and Oji River;
 We started new hospital structures in the following LGAs: Ezeagu, Udenu, Isi Uzo, Nkanu East, Agwu, Uzo Uwani and another in Orba, Udenu Local Government Area. WASH facilities are incorporated in all the new structures and the contractors were given a 3-month mandate to complete all works.

The meeting ended with the Hospital Administrator giving his approval for the ClaimYourWaterRights team to embark on the monitoring exercise whilst affirming that the Board will give the team,
needed support and collaboration.
The monitoring exercise will commence with the seven general hospitals in the state.
