Ifedayo Community Borehole: A Clean Water Project

The community has been saving money to construct a borehole for a number of years. The runaway inflation in Nigeria makes it almost impossible for the community to save up enough money to make their dream of a community borehole almost impossible to realise.

Hope Spring Water’s collaborative effort with the Ifedayo community has brought a reliable source of clean water to the residents, easing the burden on women and young children who previously spent hours daily fetching water. This project has significantly improved access to clean water for drinking, bathing, and household chores, enhancing overall well-being and quality of life.

The installation of this borehole has reduced the risk of waterborne illnesses such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery, which are often prevalent in communities without access to clean water. Moreover, it has increased productivity among women and children, allowing them to focus on their daily activities and pursue their passions.

With access to a regular water supply, women can now attend to their businesses and work without interruption, while children can attend school on time, improving their academic performance and overall well-being. The borehole has also reduced the risk of social vices such as rape and harassment, as young girls are no longer forced to venture out alone to fetch water.

The introduction of this borehole has not only alleviated water poverty but also brought a sense of joy and relief to the community. It has transformed the lives of the residents, providing a reliable source of clean, safe water all year round will reduce cases of water borne disease that afflicts some community members. Drawing drinking water from the same stream used to water livestock is not a recipe for good health.

Project Sustainability

The Ifedayo Water Project is designed to benefit the entire community, with a focus on fostering a sense of ownership and maintenance through community engagement. To ensure a reliable water supply, the community has invested in a 5,000-litre storage tank, recognizing the high demand for water in the area.

By involving the community in the project, we have empowered local leaders to take ownership of the borehole’s maintenance and upkeep. This not only ensures that the project remains operational but also promotes a sense of responsibility among community members.

Additionally, our team of water volunteers will regularly visit the community to monitor the project’s performance, providing guidance and support as needed. This proactive approach ensures that the borehole remains well-maintained and managed, providing a sustainable source of clean water for generations to come.
