Unape Alewa is a community in FCT Abuja suffering from serious water poverty. There´s no well or borehole in the community. The only source of water is a dirty river. Cattle also come to drink and defecate in the same river that the community people fetch water from. This has opened the community, mostly the children to waterborne diseases and other health challenges.

The woman and children trekked several miles to the river to get water for their daily needs. According to Mr. Andrew, one of the residents of the community said, “This is the water we drink, God knows the situation we are in, and that’s why he has been keeping us despite the fact that we drink dirty water¨.

Mr. Akilu, another resident of the community, also mentioned that there has been no government intervention in the community. He said, ¨We have a problem in terms of water, the water we are using is the same water cows are using. After the cow drinks, they urinate inside, and we don’t have access to any other water, so we are managing the water¨. He pleaded with people and organizations that have human sympathy to dig a borehole for their community.

Hope Spring Water intervention

Hope Spring Nigeria Director Bolu Olorunfemi visited the community to see the extent to which the community is suffering from water poverty. The community has no access to clean, safe water, and the community’s children have no access to education.

With Hope Spring’s mission to bring HOPE to the world through access to clean water. Unape Community was visited, and the geo-survey was done to give the community access to clean water, prevent diseases, and reduce the time wasted in collecting water.
