Road to Clean, Safe Drinking Water for Angwan Maikyau Community

Today, I had the opportunity to visit Angwan Maikyau community of Kokona Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, an agrarian village known for its production of cassava, cashew, palm fruit, and plantain. As I observed the community, I was struck by the stark contrast between their rich natural resources and the lack of access to clean, safe water.

The community is primarily composed of huts and mud houses, a testament to their humble means. Unfortunately, their primary source of water is a stream that often dries up during the dry season, leading to a scarcity of this essential resource. The limited water availability has resulted in a first-come, first-served system, which can be particularly challenging for women and children who must navigate the bush paths, risking snake bites or even sexual assault, to reach the stream.

Not the greatest source of water for any community

The second alternative, a local well without a proper ring or cover, also poses significant challenges. Women and children must walk miles to fetch water from this well, not only for their household needs but also for the production of garri, a staple food in the region. The community members expressed their frustration with this long-standing issue, pleading for assistance to provide them with clean, safe water.

As the Hope Spring Water team, we are committed to addressing this pressing need. We have visited the community to assess the situation firsthand and are now dedicated to finding a sustainable solution that will alleviate the water-related challenges faced by the Kokona people. By providing them with access to clean, safe water, we hope to improve their overall quality of life and reduce the burden of water-borne illnesses that have plagued the community for years.

This visit has reinforced our organization’s mission to empower communities and improve access to this fundamental human right. We are determined to work closely with the Kokona people to understand their unique needs and implement a solution that will truly make a lasting difference in their lives.
