Today marked a significant milestone in the Angwan Maikyau water project, as the plumbing work commenced, and the borehole was tested for functionality. As I observed the progress, one particular moment stood out and reinforced the profound impact this initiative will have on the community.
While the plumber was fixing the pump and pipes, I noticed a woman from the community returning from the well, carrying a heavy load of water. It took her 35 minutes to complete this task, a stark reminder of the time and effort these women invest daily to collect this basic necessity.
After the plumbing work was completed, the plumber proceeded to test the borehole by flushing the water. Initially, the water that emerged was not entirely clean, but as the flushing continued, the water gradually became clear and pure, ready for consumption.
The moment the flushing began, the women of the community rushed to the site, eagerly bringing their buckets to collect the water. This spontaneous reaction was a powerful testament to the community’s long-standing struggle with water poverty and their profound gratitude for the relief this project will bring.
As the community members began drinking the water, their faces lit up with joy and relief. This simple act of accessing clean, reliable water was a transformative moment, one that will undoubtedly improve their overall health and well-being.
The Hope Spring Water Charity Foundation’s commitment to this project has the power to change the trajectory of this community. By reducing the time and effort required to collect water, the women will have more opportunities to focus on their livelihoods, while the children can attend school without interruption.
This journey has been a humbling and inspiring experience, witnessing the resilience and determination of the Angwan Maikyau community. The successful completion of the plumbing and testing phase is a crucial step towards a brighter future, where access to clean water is no longer a luxury, but a fundamental right.
Special thanks to Bolu Olorunfemi, Director of SuS Pads, whose contribution played a key role in bringing this project to life.
